Engaging the Past to Energize the Future: Creating Space for Inclusive Public Discourse
The 25th anniversary of ASBH is an opportunity for us as a community to reconsider the role of bioethics and humanities in society. For example, how best to respond to divisive policies and frame honest and open discussions with those with whom we disagree. Part of this reconsideration calls for creating spaces—physical or otherwise—that facilitate interaction and deliberation.
In that vein, the 2023 ASBH Annual Conference will address critical questions including: How can we frame conversations and debates to identify substantive discussion points without resorting to pure rhetoric? How best can we solicit the perspectives of key stakeholders when making decisions with broad implications? How can we destructuralize racism and other biases routinely built into healthcare access?
Inclusion of the ASBH logo or text referring to the Annual Conference or the conference theme in the submission is not required. Those items will be incorporated into the final overall design by the ASBH staff, using the winning design.
Any mixed media suitable for reproduction as a poster or cover are allowed, including computer-generated graphics and photographs. All submissions must be original art. No trademarked or copyrighted images or phrases shall be submitted as part of any design. ASBH will require written permission from any subject included in any photographs.
Digital designs should be submitted as a 300 dpi JPG or PDF. If a traditional painting or drawing is submitted, it should be scanned and sent as a 300 dpi JPG or PDF. Submission dimensions must be at least 8.5 x 11 inches. Larger sizes are acceptable.
One design may be chosen by the Program Committee and announced in Spring 2023. All or part of the winning design may be used, at the sole discretion of ASBH. The design (or portions of the design) may appear on conference materials, signage, or the ASBH website, as deemed appropriate by ASBH. ASBH reserves the right, for any reason, to select no winner or winners.
The individual artist or artists will be recognized in conference materials with one paragraph describing the winning submission and one biographical paragraph. The winning artist(s) will be granted one complimentary registration for the 2022 ASBH Annual Conference and a complimentary year of ASBH membership.
All artists will retain the rights to their work but must grant ASBH unlimited license to use all or part of the design in relation to the 2023 Annual Conference. To the extent allowed by law, the artist grants a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free, nonexclusive, sublicensable, unconditional, and transferable license to ASBH to edit, modify, cut, rearrange, add to, delete from, reproduce, store, modify, copy, transmit, publish, post, broadcast, display, adapt, exhibit, and/or otherwise use or reuse the artist's entry, name, and biographical material, including, but not limited to, use for advertising, promotional, commercial, or any other purposes without further review, notice, approval, consideration, or compensation to the entrant or any third party. The determination of eligibility of entries and any interpretation of these rules is at the sole discretion of ASBH and shall be final and binding upon all entrants. By participating, the entrant agrees to abide by and be bound by these rules.
