Company: The American Journal of Bioethics
Job Title: Senior Infrastructure Coordinator
Company Description: AJOB is one of the largest and most read, and is the most cited journal in bioethics and 21 other disciplines. It has been lauded by many newspapers, magazines, medical and science journals, and is home to bioethics.net, the most read and more importantly most authoritative (most cited) Internet site (#1 on Google for 5 years+) in all of bioethics, ethics, philosophy, health services research (e.g., Academic Medicine, Health Affairs, and dozens of websites in clinical medicine are all competitive in traffic), and in dozens of medical areas the Journal's site leads the way by orders of magnitude. AJOB is part of Bioethics Education Network, or bene, a newly formed, NYS Dept of Education, IRS, and Dept. of Revenue-approved LLC based in Albany, New York but with editors and staff around the nation.
bene also includes the world's only Editor's Blog by the editors of a major bioethics journal, as well as tens of thousands of pages of information including the definitive lists of events and jobs in the fields associated with ethics in medicine and science (stem cells, cloning, etc.). bene is directed by Dr. Glenn McGee PhD, a well-known bioethics scholar and pioneer in bioethics information dissemination, having begun the first bioethics website in 1994, then the first contemporaneous conversation journal in medicine or science, the first online discussion among media about bioethics, the first bioethics podcast, the first iTunes University online masters program in the discipline, the first program to study states and bioethics, and websites funded to educate high school students, college alumni and media. ).
bene, put simply, exists to build the careers and knowledge of those in bioethics and in government and the media who need to know about bioethics. The American Journal of Bioethics is read in the office of virtually every U.S. appellate court justice, member of Congress, and even the White House. It has caused FDA scandals leading to the reform of medicine in a broad way and introduced the nation to a number of new technologies like face transplantation. It is regularly featured in places like Oprah, New York Times, etc. Dr. McGee is a well-known public intellectual, having authored both a syndicated column and a column for The Scientist, and as such aims and has been very successful helping Interns find positions almost without exception in outstanding positions in virtually every endeavor where the interaction of the public, publishers, media and academics is involved.
Pay: This is an internship of the classic sort found in a journal setting. Unusually, it includes travel, benefits, and academic credit is possible. This is NOT a position to earn "pocket change," it is a 'resume builder' for a serious student or other person seeking to build skills in bioethics that would otherwise be nearly impossible to gain. Work on the journal that increases its ability to interact in the community can result in projects that would on a contract basis be remunerated financially.
Job Description: This person will be responsible for the back end (PHP) of bioethics.net, blog.bioethics.net, and the interface between The American Journal of Bioethics and the above. They will interface with web designers and editors, and will be widely publicly known for their work. This internship position has been filled three times, and all three have gone on to outstanding positions that would never have been possible in an internship in a large computer corporation, even of the nature of Google. bioethics.net is, though, incidentally a partner of Apple and Google, and has relationships which this person would be able to access at every level. There simply are no internships in health policy and computing that would produce a greater yield per hour for good work. This position must be filled immediately so the first highly qualified applicant will be placed. One reference is required, but that can be by email or phone.
Qualifications: see http://bioethics.org/listserv/s.pl?which=32-08-30-2008-11-15&page=/www.linkedin.com/jobs?viewJob=&jobId=600144
