Early Career Advisor Program

The ASBH Early Career Advisor Program gives individuals early in their career in bioethics or the humanities the opportunity to present a paper or project to more experienced members of ASBH virtually at the 2020 Virtual ASBH Annual Conference.*

To be considered for participation, applicants must be:

  • A member of ASBH
  • less than 7 years since completion of post-graduate training [e.g., MA, PhD, fellowship]
  • not currently enrolled in a graduate program
  • below associate professor rank

Papers/projects will be read in advance by a group of experienced scholars in bioethics and the humanities. There will be an opportunity for advisors and authors to discuss the project/paper over a virtual meeting during the 2020 Virtual ASBH Annual Conference. The expectation is that this discussion will assist early career members of ASBH to advance toward publication or completion of a specific paper or project that is significant for their career development.

Early career members of ASBH are invited to submit a completed application including a 500 to 750-word abstract/summary of the proposed paper or project and a curriculum vitae by July 24, 2020. Examples of projects that are appropriate for submission include scholarly papers, a draft of a manuscript for a play, or a book proposal (not an entire book manuscript). Papers should be works-in-progress that have not been accepted for publication and that will not be submitted for publication until after the virtual ASBH meeting in October. They should, however, be sufficiently developed by the time of the meeting to benefit from the workshop. Please do not submit proposals for papers that will be written only if they are selected for the workshop.

A peer review committee will select the papers and projects for the Early Career Advisor Program. Those who are accepted will be required to submit a full draft of the paper by September 18, 2020 to allow peer reviewers sufficient time to read the papers and prepare their comments. Individuals submitting a project that is not a traditional paper will be required to submit the project by September 18, 2020 so that advisors have sufficient time to consider the project and develop feedback. Papers or projects that are not received by September 18th or are not sufficiently developed to share with readers may be removed from the program.

Early career members of ASBH who are accepted into the Early Career Advisor Program are expected to register for and attend the 2020 Virtual ASBH Annual Conference, October 12-18, 2020.
