Healthcare Ethics Consultation Certification Renewal FAQs
Why are there three different options for renewal?
Three options for renewal are available to accommodate HEC-Cs from varying of backgrounds, learning preferences, and access to professional activities. Options also are configured to recognize that family and career transitions may limit access to either specific healthcare ethics consulting experience or professional development activities.
Do I only need to choose one option for renewal?
How do I know if my experience relates to the HEC-C content outline?
Each renewal candidate’s experience will be evaluated in the same manner as it is for the 400 hours of experience needed for initial certification. Using the renewal application, you will first document your accumulated experience by selecting the HEC-C content outline domain(s) and task(s) that best describe the healthcare ethics consultation work you have performed during the prior 5-year certification period. Then you will provide information about each professional position you held during the previous certification period involving your experience related to the HEC-C content outline. You can download the experience and professional activity tracking forms on the renewal requirements page.
Qualifying Continuing Professional Education
How do I document proof of continuing education?
Any continuing professional education qualifies if it is offered by a professional entity that addresses content-related to the domains and tasks outlined in the HEC-C content outline. Renewal candidates are encouraged maintain documentation of the following for each education activity:
- Number of continuing education hours earned related to HEC-C content outline.
- A certificate of completion that indicates number of hours earned and includes a statement that the provider offers credit from an accredited sponsor (e.g. ACCME, ANCC, NASW, ACPE).
- An outline or schedule for the activity.
A tracking form is available on the HEC-C renewal requirements page.
If I am not a physician or nurse, will you still accept a CME or CNE certificate as proof of continuing education credits?
Yes, as long as the hours have been provided or approved by an accredited sponsor (e.g. ACCME, ANCC, NASW, ACPE) and relate to the HEC-C content outline domains.
Does an applicant have to actually claim offered credit or will an attendance certificate suffice?
It is not required that renewal candidates claim a specific type of continuing education credit as long as documentation states the number of hours earned and that the hours have been provided or approved by an accredited sponsor (e.g. ACCME, ANCC, NASW, ACPE).
Other Specified Professional Activities
Must all activities need to specifically relate to healthcare ethics consultation?

For publication activities, do I have to be the primary author?
No. You must provide documentation that you were included in the author block for the publication.
Do newsletters and blogs count for publishing?
What documentation will be required to prove I’ve met the requirements?
